Good to know

Clip or GIF?

A clip keeps full colour and sound and is usually far smaller. A GIF has no sound and at most 256 colours per frame, but plays everywhere, even where videos do not.

Why the clip takes as long as the part

The browser records the part while it plays, so a 20-second part takes about 20 seconds. Keep the tab open until it finishes.

Smaller GIFs

Fewer frames per second, a smaller width and a shorter part all make the file smaller. GIFs here are limited to 15 seconds.

Other tools

Need a still image in another format? Use the image format converter or the image shrinker.

Sources: W3C MediaStream Recording specification (MediaRecorder) and Media Capture from DOM Elements (canvas captureStream), which let the browser record the part as it plays: we ask for MP4 when the browser can make it and WebM otherwise; CompuServe, Graphics Interchange Format Version 89a (1990): each colour table holds at most 256 colours, and frame delays are counted in hundredths of a second. GIFs are encoded on your device with gifenc by Matt DesLauriers (MIT licence). The trimmed clip is a new recording, so its quality and format depend on your browser.
