How the price is built
Weight × the rate for the karat. Karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold: 22K is 91.6%, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75%. The rest is other metals that make it harder.
The shop's fee for the design and work. It can be per gram or a fixed amount, and it is often negotiable. Ask for it to be written on the receipt separately.
Gold jewellery is standard-rated: 5% VAT on the gold value and the making charges. Investment gold (bars, ingots and coins of 99% purity or more, traded on bullion markets) is zero-rated.
When you sell, shops pay for the gold only, at their buying rate on the day. The making charges and the VAT you paid do not come back.
