About Hijri dates

A lunar calendar

Each Hijri month starts with a new moon and has 29 or 30 days. A Hijri year of 12 months has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year.

Umm al-Qura

This page uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated Hijri calendar built into modern browsers. It is good for planning and for converting dates in documents.

Ramadan and Eid: watch the moon

In the UAE, the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and the Dhu al-Hijjah dates are set after the crescent moon is sighted. The official date can differ by one day from the calculated one.

Holidays move each year

Because the Hijri year is shorter, Ramadan and the Eids come about 11 days earlier every Gregorian year and go all the way round the seasons in about 33 years.

Sources: the Umm al-Qura calendar as built into your browser through the Unicode CLDR and ICU calendar data (calendar "islamic-umalqura"); conversions both ways use that same calendar, so they agree. If your browser lacks it, a standard tabular Islamic calendar is used and can be a day or two off. In the UAE, the moon-sighting committee announces the start of Ramadan, Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr) and Dhu al-Hijjah after looking for the crescent, as reported each year by the UAE news agency WAM and national newspapers, so official dates can differ from calculated ones by a day. For official documents, use the date printed on them.
