The rate is

Flat: interest on the full loan for the whole term. Reducing: interest only on what you still owe. A flat rate costs about twice what it sounds. Compare the two in detail.

Loan term

5 years (60 months) is the longest a car loan can run under UAE Central Bank rules.

An estimate: comprehensive cover in the UAE often costs roughly 2.5% to 5% of the car's value a year, more for young or new drivers and sports cars. Get real quotes.

AED

An estimate: the official price band for a 4-cylinder saloon is AED 750 to 1,300 a year, more for bigger engines and 4×4s. Third-party pays for damage you cause to others, not to your own car.

In Dubai, renewing a private car costs AED 350 plus AED 20 in knowledge and innovation fees. Once the car is over 3 years old, add the yearly technical test. Other emirates differ.

At least 20% down

UAE Central Bank rules cap a car loan at 80% of the car's value and 60 months. A bigger down payment or a shorter term means less interest.

Ask for the reducing rate

Car loans are often quoted as a flat rate, which looks about half as expensive as it is. Banks advertising a flat rate must show the equivalent reducing rate too.

The 50% limit

All your monthly loan and card repayments together must stay at or under 50% of your salary. A car payment counts.

Costs this leaves out

Servicing, tyres, repairs, fines, loan fees and the value the car loses each year. Keep some room in the budget.
