Abu Dhabi's cheaper band is a daily allowance, so the number of days matters.

Meter type (see your bill)

DEWA lists a meter service charge for each meter type. Most homes have Type 1: check the type and the amount on your bill.

The housing fee is not a utility charge

In Dubai, tenants who are not UAE nationals pay the Dubai Municipality housing fee: 5% of the yearly rent, split into 12 monthly parts and collected on the DEWA bill. It is a municipality fee, not electricity or water, so saving power does not lower it.

In Abu Dhabi, tenants pay a municipality fee of 5% of the rent (or of the rental index, whichever is higher), billed monthly by the distribution company. UAE nationals are exempt for their own home.

check with the authority Sharjah and the northern emirates may add a municipality or housing fee too: we could not confirm the rate.

Cut the summer bill

24°C or higher

DEWA advises setting the thermostat at 24°C or higher: each degree up can save up to 5% of the air conditioner's use. In a UAE summer the AC is most of the bill.

Fan plus AC

A ceiling fan uses about as much power as a light bulb and lets you set the AC a degree or two higher. Turn fans off when you leave the room.

Clean filters, block the sun

Clean AC filters at least monthly in summer. Close curtains or blinds on sunny windows and seal gaps around doors and windows.

Old AC? Check the stars

An AC's useful life is about ten years. DEWA says replacing an old unit with a 4- or 5-star energy-rated one can save up to 25% of cooling use.

DEWA bills water in cubic metres since March 2025 (Dubai Media Office, 9 February 2025). Dubai sewerage charge of 2 fils per imperial gallon in 2026 (Dubai Municipality schedule reported by The National and Khaleej Times, November 2024), converted here at 219.969 gallons per m³. Dubai housing fee of 5% of yearly rent for non-national tenants. TAQA Distribution (formerly ADDC) Rates and Tariffs 2025 and its 2025 tariff document (daily allowances and rates for nationals and expats, apartments and villas) and its municipality fee page (5% of rent). Sharjah sewerage fee of 1.5 fils per gallon from 1 April 2025, UAE citizens exempt (Sharjah Executive Council decision, reported by WAM and Gulf News). Etihad Water and Electricity, 22 January 2019: slab tariff for non-national residents in freehold homes (28, 33, 37 and 43 fils per kWh). SEWA's own tariff page could not be reached: its rates here are as reported by a third-party guide and are marked "check with the authority"; we found no current published rates for UAE nationals with SEWA or Etihad Water and Electricity, or for their water.
