Banks and exchange houses buy and sell at a worse rate than the one shown here, and may add a fee. 2% is only an example: compare their rate with this one to find yours.

    Reading an exchange rate

    The dollar is fixed

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar: 1 USD = 3.6725 AED, the rate the Central Bank of the UAE uses. That is why the USD rate never moves here, and currencies pegged to the dollar (like the Saudi riyal) barely move either.

    Mid-market rate

The rates on this page are mid-market rates: halfway between buying and selling. Nobody gives you this rate over the counter. It is the fair yardstick to compare offers against.

    Where the margin hides

A "zero fee" transfer can still cost you if the rate is poor. Work out what actually arrives: amount × their rate − fees. Then compare that number between two or three places.

    Rates change

Most rates move every day. The rate you are quoted is only fixed once you pay. For big amounts, check again on the day.
